Doing Business

Lowndes County provides a quiet rural environment easily within reach of all the amenities of the large city environment of the Montgomery MSA. In addition, our Interstate Exits provide easy access to traditional points of destination on the short drive to Alabama’s beautiful beaches.

The County was established on January 20, 1830, and named in honor of William Lowndes, a statesman from South Carolina. It is located in a rural community area within south-central Alabama, often referred to as the “Black Belt”. Rich, dark soils and a mosaic of rolling grasslands with dense hardwood and pine forests characterize the Black Belt area. The meandering Alabama River runs within our environmentally rich county.

There are many historic sites and points of interest within the county. Examples include The Lowndes County Interpretative Center, operated by the National Park Service, a must visit site along the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail located in White Hall, Alabama. The county has a rich Native American history that is featured at the Holy Ground Battlefield Park and throughout the county.

There is abundant hunting and fishing in the area. These activities bring in sportsmen who stay at the Southern Sportsman’s Hunting Lodge, fish at the Robert Henry Lock & Dam on the Alabama River, and hunt in the county’s Alabama Wildlife Management Area (WMA).

If camping is your passion, there are wonderful camping locations. The Gunter Hill Park Campground offers a peaceful scene of trees and nature on the backwaters of the Alabama River, part of the Alabama River Lakes, maintained by US Army Corps of Engineers. The Prairie Creek Park campground is located on the banks of Woodruff Lake as part of the scenic Alabama River system.

World-class golf courses are within easy thirty minute drives to the north or south, the Capitol Hill course in Prattville and Cambrian Ridge in Greenville respectively, both being stops on the Robert Trent Jones Trail of Golf.

What about arts and crafts? Calico Fort, an annual arts and craft fair, has operated annually for decades as an eagerly anticipated event featuring vendors from across the Southeast, as well as local and regional craftsman & entertainers. Proceeds go to local charities.
